Legacy Giving Guidelines

“But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.“
(1 Chronicles 29:14, NIV)

Why Give?

Legacy Giving allows Wesleyans and friends of Wesley Methodist Church to contribute in a lasting way to our ministry and mission in gratitude to God. Through planned donations, individuals can support future generations and sow seeds of faith, hope and love that will bear fruit. Every gift, big or small, makes a meaningful impact.

We are happy to receive any gift that God has placed on the heart of the giver, for:

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:7-8, ESV)

Here are the guidelines for those who would like to give to Wesley Methodist Church through Legacy Giving.

What to Give?

Legacy Giving may include cash, property, shares, bonds, other marketable securities, CPF monies, life insurance, and other registerable assets and may be in the form of bequests, gifts, endowments and other donations.

The Church may not be able to accept any items not in the form specified above and/or court applications may be required to clarify legal positions on the matter, and/or permission may be sought to liquidate said gifts.

How will your Gift be used?

Purpose of the Gift

We encourage all donations to be made to the General Fund. The General Fund can be used at the Church's discretion and gifts received in this manner provide the Church with the flexibility to deploy funds to projects and beneficiaries as needed. For example, funds donated may be used for future church redevelopment, additions & alterations to the Church's premises, missional outreach and other projects and beneficiaries supported by the Church. All gifts given without a specified purpose will be received into the General Fund.

Gifts which have a specified purpose will be subject to the Wesley Methodist Church Policy on Designated Funds and the church may or may not be able to accept such gifts, depending on factors such as the practicality of disbursing such funds.

Who do we give to?

Please specify in any wills or other relevant documents that the intended recipient is:

“The Secretary of the Trustees of The Methodist Church in Singapore, a body corporate incorporated by & under the Methodist Episcopal Location Board Ordinance, Chapter 368, Singapore Statutes on behalf of and for the benefit and use of Wesley Methodist Church, currently located at 5 Fort Canning Road, Singapore 179493.”

Note:

  • The Secretary of the Trustees (SoT) of The Methodist Church in Singapore serves as trustee for Methodist entities such as Wesley Methodist Church, and is able to accept donations of real property, shares, bonds and other registerable assets on our behalf.

  • The SoT should not be named as the executor or trustee under an individual’s will. If so named, the SoT will be unable to accept such appointment and this may result in unnecessary expenses being incurred by the deceased person’s estate in securing the appointment of another executor or trustee.

Who can help me Give?

If you intend to make plans for Legacy Giving, you may contact Wesley Methodist Church at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for any clarifications, including whether the gifts given will be suitable for the Church to receive. This includes if God has placed it upon your heart to give to specified purposes. We will be happy to speak to you about it.

For help in writing a will you may refer to these guides (this is not an official endorsement of the services provided by the respective organisations by Wesley Methodist Church):

If you need specific legal advice, we recommend approaching an independent lawyer who is not appointed by the Church and is not in any advisory or leadership capacity of the Church.

We also highly recommend that donors inform family members or potential beneficiaries of the intent to bequeath the whole or part of the estate to the Church.

What Happens When You Give?

Upon notification of the gift, the Pastor-in-Charge, Chairperson of the Finance Committee, Directory of Administry, and the Finance Manager will assess the gift and recommend for acceptance. Such decisions are to be made within 2 months of the Church receiving notification of the intended donation.

Any gifts which have a specified purpose will be subject to the Wesley Methodist Church Policy on Designated Funds and be assessed for suitability for use before acceptance. The church may choose to reject the gift if the intended purpose is not in line with the Church’s values and/or objectives, or for any other reason. The church reserves the right to liquidate non-cash assets that are received.

The acceptance or otherwise of the gift are to be acknowledged by the PIC and/or DA by registered letter to the executor of the will.
