My spiritual companion journey has been very fruitful and an eye-opening experience for me! This was inspired from my post Strangely Warmed Retreat journey in October 2024. I wanted to read God’s Word more than just a textbook. One of the highlights of the Strangely Warmed Retreat was my first spiritual companion experience where I could be honest and personal before God.

After such an enjoyable Strangely Warmed Retreat, I wanted to continue with my spiritual discipline, and one of my greatest desire was to re-establish my habit of journalling. I stopped for so long as I could not feel any inspiration until I attended the Strangely Warmed Retreat. That had led me to sign up for more Spiritual Companion sessions so that I can recall what I learnt.

I love reading the Word of God. However, I would love to do so beyond just a textbook because He is personal! Through the spiritual companion sessions, little did I expect that after about the 3rd session, I gradually opened up more with my spiritual companion. She led me to two types of spiritual exercises which I encountered in the last Strangely Warmed Retreat.

The highlight for me was a combination of Lectio Divina and Examen exercise. My spiritual companion shared with me a link with the daily reflection. As I took time to ponder, the topic that stood out to me was “Abide in My Love” taken from the scriptural passage, John 15 … the phrases, “God is love” and “abide in Christ’s love” were loud. What does it mean to abide in His love? That is to live a Christ-centered life. Be intentional in spending time with Him! Thinking about Him. That inspired me to journal everything about what it means to Abide in His love. Read His word! Listen to worship songs!

At each spiritual companion session, my spiritual companion would do a short check in with me, lead me to quieten our hearts in silence, and listen to the prayer hymn ‘Turn your eyes upon Jesus”, before saying a prayer to invite God into our session. I will then share my issues and she shares her thoughts with me, as the Spirit leads.

I was at a period of change: I had left my job of 20 years in the media, had health issues and my daughter was going to university. For the first time in my life, I had no obligations, but I was also uncertain of what the future holds.

At one session, my spiritual companion shared with me that it would be easy for me to get the job if God meant it for me. This was freeing, and I learned to enjoy the rest that God has given me without worries. I continued volunteering at church and it was while volunteering at Journey to the Cross that a fellow Wesleyan approached me and offered me a job! And I could not wait to share the good news with my spiritual companion.

My SC was also a driven self-starter in her job in social service: she understands me and I felt safe sharing my issues with her. Even though it was her first time as spiritual companion, it was her years as a Christian and journey with God that showed up in discernment and guidance during the spiritual companion sessions.

I thank God for the pairing and am grateful to experience the love and care from God through spiritual companionship.

I signed up for the Spiritual Companion session to seek clarity and wisdom as I felt stuck in a few areas of my life. I desired change and to grow in new ways but yet felt that God was not done with me in the areas that I have been in committed to for many years. This tension made me feel as if I was ungrateful for what God was already doing in my life and I almost felt guilty that I desired more.

My Spiritual Companion gently corrected me that I was clearly grateful and it is ok to desire more. We decided to narrow down to a specific area in my life that I had been finding difficulty in and as I vulnerably shared my honest feelings, my spiritual companion gave me a powerful and simple encouragement "to stay strong and keep looking towards the eternal". I was so moved as I thought I was seeking answers or direction but all I truly needed was encouragement and I felt so seen and heard by the Lord in that moment.

It is a ministry of soul care where individuals/directees become attuned to the presence, purpose and power of God in their lives so that they may walk in intimacy, grow in holiness and act in faithful surrender to God’s glory. 
  
In Spiritual Companionship, Spiritual Companions (‘SC’) offer sacred space as spiritual guides in the spiritual conversations and prayer with individuals/directees to clarify and discern for God’s invitations in their lives. 
  
No matter what kind of season we are in, our spiritual companions can be there to “help us to hear His voice, be aware of His presence and see His footprints as we walk through life.” (Benner, David. Sacred Companions: The Gift of Spiritual Friendship & Direction).

In Wesley Methodist Church, we have a pool of trained Spiritual Companions.

Each session is 45 minutes. Sessions will be held in Church premises.

Upon filling up this intake form, you will be matched with a suitable SC who will reach out to you to fix a suitable time slot.

You will hear from us upon submitting this form. Kindly give us about 2 weeks to make the necessary arrangement and to find a suitable and available SC.

Upon submitting this form, a pre-session pack will be sent to you. We recommend you take 30 minutes to prepare for your SC slot.
